My Background

Therapy is a personal and relational experience, and it can help to know some basic details about the person you’ll be working with.

One helpful thing to know is that I’m a therapist not just because I care about people, and have empathy for them, but because I’ve always been a very psychologically-minded person. My mind goes easily to the complex inner dynamics we experience at different times and stages along the journey of life.

This may have something to do with my childhood experience in a family that moved several times between different countries around the world. Encountering cultures and peoples who lived and thought so differently from one another, I wondered: who are these varied, complex creatures called human beings?

As an adult, while getting my PhD in political theory and psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, I became fascinated with the field of psychoanalysis, which ultimately led to my present career as a practicing psychotherapist. After teaching as a college professor at universities in California and Montreal, Canada, I decided to take the leap into clinical practice.

I received my formal training in counseling psychology at the Wright Institute in Berkeley, with additional training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Family Service Agency of Marin, also in northern California. After working at a family mental health clinic in Long Beach and then a group private practice in Beverly Hills, I opened my own practice in Manhattan Beach, where I am today.

I find the work deeply fulfilling, and consider myself lucky to be doing it.  It’s gratifying to be able to help people move toward the life they want.
