My Background

Therapy is a personal and relational experience, and it can help to know some basic details about the person you’ll be working with.  But for a variety of reasons, many therapists, including myself, think it better for the work of therapy to disclose little about themselves.

I’ll try to resolve this dilemma in an admittedly unsatisfactory way, by adding some very brief words to the “About Me” section.

Beyond the background details of my training and practice as a therapist, and beyond my prior career as a college professor in humanities and the social sciences, I might here mention my experience as a child growing up in multiple countries, mainly in Latin America. The cultural and socioeconomic diversity I encountered opened me to the diversity of human experience generally, and also to the complexity of each person’s situation.  I try to bring that spirit into my work as a therapist.
